China: Drip irrigation market becomes increasingly segmented and specialized

Soilless culture technology is becoming widely used in China. Among them, drip irrigation facilities are necessary equipment for supplying inorganic nutrition and water, which is essential for soilless cultivation. On the application of drip irrigation technology, HortidailyChina interviewed Keren from Agriplus in Jiangsu Province.

Keren introduced, "When growers choose drip irrigation facilities, their main consideration is the cost and the effect. They would like to calculate how the cost can be recovered within a few years, and what is the effect of using the equipment. Therefore, good drip irrigation facilities are currently mainly used for crops with high economic value, such as blueberries, sunshine rose grapes, etc., and these facilities require a more professional team with planting management techniques. Taking blueberries as an example, it requires about tens of millions of investment for planting tens of hectares, and professional agricultural companies are needed for investment management."

However, the competition is extremely fierce in   the domestic market of drip irrigation. Mainly because it has a low barrier to entry the market, and there are a large number of different companies, from beginner to senior. As the market requirements get more and more stringent, the development of drip irrigation technology becomes more and more segmented and specialized and the requirements are constantly increasing. Keren continues, "The core components of Agriplus's drip irrigation come from abroad, and sometimes we also seek alternatives within China according to the needs of customers. We take the interests of customers as the starting point and then formulate corresponding irrigation strategies according to their actual situation and local conditions. We will give a variety of design solutions and construction plans so that customers can choose the right one. ”

Keren continued: "Yunnan has a large number of blueberry plantations. Agriplus and Driscoll's, a blueberry company, have maintained friendly cooperation. Agriplus had already participated in the planning w hen Driscoll's chose Yunnan to start its business. Yunnan has a good climate, but the soil conditions are not enough for blueberries, which makes soilless cultivation an ideal solution. Agriplus worked together with Driscoll's and designed an integrated water and fertilizer irrigation scheme a fter many tests. Keren said, "At present, the production level of domestic blueberries is still far from the international level. We can ensure that the irrigation from the pump room to the shed keeps  consistent from the beginning and end when u sing our drip irrigation facilities. The plants are accurately supplied with water and nutrition, and an uneven and untimely supply of water and fertilizer will be avoided. ”

"The planting area of blueberry  in Yunnan is very large, and the blueberry plantation is basically more than tens of hectares. A large number of enterprises piling up in Yunnan has also led to the rapid land development in Yunnan. In 2021, the Yunnan government issued a policy to prevent the use of arable land for planting non-staple food. It becomes less easy to lease a large amount of land from Yunnan now. Moreover, the development of drip irrigation agriculture requires flat land. But Yunnan has a large number of mountain areas that are not suitable for agriculture with drip irrigation because of the large complexity in terms of design and construction. In some mountainous areas with smaller slopes, investors are trying to level the land with soil. But they need to make sure that the cost is reasonable. In addition, the constructed farms have increased employment in surrounding villages. But as more and more farms pour in, it's not so easy to find a suitable and young workforce around because most of them are already hired. ”
