The backlog of Southern California ports has brought setbacks to the local agricultural industry

There are a number of cargo ships in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, extending all the way to San Diego. This situation has been exacerbated by the shortage of truck drivers and warehouse workers, and there have been reports of shortages of goods on shelves affecting different departments.

In Monterey County, agriculture is seeing some of these effects. Overall, the impact of delayed shipments is relatively small. For the industry, other factors are even more important. Adding another layer of uncertainty are issues such as water supply, labor shortages, and inflation. Some smaller growers decided to rent out their land instead of growing their own produce.

Chris Christian, senior vice president of the California Strawberry Council, said that due to port issues, strawberry farmers have seen delays in the supply of drip irrigation tapes (used for irrigation) and mulch film and price increases to prevent water loss. But she does not expect strawberry production to decrease next year. However, exporting goods may become a problem.
