Matt LaFleur still doesn't have a timeline for when rookie WR Christian Watson will return from PUP almost a week into camp. "I told you," he added, "no more expectations." LaFleur says Watson "is getting better" with his knee.  2) TE Marcedes Lewis is not participating first padded practice today. I'm wondering if this is the fiercest competition in training camp for the Packers in the last few years -- on offense, defense, and special teams.

I think that this very well could be the fiercest across the board after today when we started to see plays from depth OLBs, ILBs, TEs. There really isn’t a group without real competition and opportunities other than QB in any phase. I really can’t remember that being the case even in really good years.

Zach Kruse tweeted after practice today that the most yards a 4th round WR has had as a rookie is 1131 yards. Hell, even Leatherhead is taking a peek at the bandwagon to see if there's any room left!

I like Doubs. He’s not going to get 1131 yards. He probably won’t get half that (566)

If he rolls into the 1st game healthy I'd take the over on 566. But you keep being the denier.

I am normally very dubious about rookie receiver predictions for over 50 yards a game. It’s really rare. As things stand though, I think the starting 3 are Watkins, Lazard and Cobb/Jones but with Doubs getting plenty of snaps behind them.

If you saw him pace Stokes in a sprint today, you now see his true speed and he can play anywhere as we have already seen. If he stays healthy he could easily beat those numbers even on limited targets. He’s likely to be first up in the event of an injury too because of his versatility.

Even with designed plays for Watson as well and if Rodgers makes the cut, he is likely to get enough targets. In reality, the active list is looking very likely to be Watkins, Lazard, Cobb, Doubs and Watson or the best WR on STs if all stay healthy and Doubs or Watson aren’t the primary returner(s). Two pure slots are rarely active otherwise. After the first two, snaps will be spread around (including Jones).

Keep an eye on Toure too. He is apparently continually making plays for “first downs” over the middle. Not spectacular but critical down wins. He may yet make a very strong case if they keep 7 or one isn’t healthy or ready (Watson?). Winfree’s versatility could be his biggest source of competition in that scenario.

566 would be 33 yards a game. If he has a couple one hundred yards games he needs to average 25 yards a game over the other 15. I think he catches enough long balls to make a 100 yard game or two possible.

I don’t think 50 yards as an average is unrealistic based on what we have seen translating through camp. Injuries will happen and his positional versatility and speed is such that I see him both deep targets and enough others to be near that point. I suppose if we really go 2 WR sets a lot, or they really take a Cobb off a snap count and Cobb and Watkins stay healthy that might limit things too much, but I see it likely that Doubs is on the field enough over the season if he stays healthy. He is simply more versatile than alternatives.

If 50 yards a game average over 16/17games is that easy, more rookies would have accomplished it. Obviously, there are things that prevent that from happening.

First, assuming he's healthy, and active, and catching balls for 17 games is an optimistic assumption. This is a long season, longer than anything Doubs has ever experienced. I think it's more realistic that he'll miss a game or two.

So 15 games. There may also be a game or two where he only gets maybe 1 or 2 targets, so he won't catch his average So now we're down to about 13 games, and he'd have to average 40 yards a game over all 13 of those.

It's all possible, LL, I'm just pointing out it's a longshot that he'll reach those numbers. I'd be happy as hell if he had 500 yards, or 50 catches, or both. I don't think it'll work like that.

I would not be upset about 565 yards from Doubs.

I did use a photo of Watkins, Lazard and Cobb in this article as a reminder as to which players are the top 3 WRs. I am hoping that Watson and/or Doubs push for playing time at least, and if not initially, then by season's end.

I think there's a good chance they have Cobb on a snap count and only use him as a 3rd down and red zone guy.

I'm mainly joking around with the over the top hype stuff going on. I did think he had a decent shot to be the #3 WR before TC started because of how green Watson is and now he's even further behind. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he was a 1000 yard WR next year. When guys with a decent skill set are willing to work hard.

He lost a lot of money due to not being able to test and the depth at WR this year. I think three WRs, including my draft crush Velus, that should not have been drafted ahead of him.

Assuming we keep six and have one inactive….Cobb was inactive for five games, Watkins for four, Lazard for two….so if Doubs stays healthy he’ll be in uniform. I hope he doesn’t break himself on return attempts.

All the comments about the defense being in Rodgers face; stopping the run with ease, and blowing up plays indicates one of two things. Either, the defense has vastly improved. Or the Packers OL is a sieve. Still very early, but never too early to worry.

Clearly when it is an intra-squad affair, it is largely a zero sum game. If Gary is dominating, then he is dominating someone. It is helpful when both or all parties to a play are identified.

Nice to see Yosh stonewall Gary twice in two one on ones. In reality, it’s going to be much harder for the O with young and moving pieces, and it’s typically tougher for them when Pads first go on (outside of the one on one WR/DB drill).

For the most part, our first D is all veteran (other than one ILB) and the D often knows what plays/Routes are being run. That makes a huge advantage at this point.

Even with that, the O was scoring today. There were some likely sacks too, but that’s football. To see today as evidence that our O line is a turnstile would be to misconstrue what actually is occurring as a whole and where we are at this point.

Good to see Garvin showing up when the pads go on and Wyatt slowly showing his potential. Love apparently had his best day in camp and a very good one. Doubs hopefully didn’t do any lasting damage, but full pads: same story for him.

Nagler was really impressed with that Ford play and a couple by Kobe Jones (OLB) and CVL at LT with the seconds. I noticed that Jones was at RT with the seconds. While I hear that Walker is being deliberately brought on slowly after his injury? I have not noticed Jones with the twos before. Is that an indication of him having showed some promise?

Toure hasn’t done anything truly spectacular in terms of a highlight reel, but just keeps getting “third downs”. It seems like Scott is starting to look like the guy from his rookie year: the one who can cover and play deep. That would be wonderful.

I’m intrigued to a point by Davis (WR) after todays plaudits, but Hyam is also showing potential in the passing game and as a genuine blocker. He might be my PS favorite among the deeper WR depth at this point (I do like the idea of a guy who can block like Lazard has in the past in reserve). Davis just seems a bit too eerily like Kumerow. Does everything well but just not quite enough of an athlete in any respect to have an impact in season. Would be a B team star. I think we can keep more potential than that on the PS by keeping others and not have less help in reserve this year.

Some of the TEs starting to show up in the passing game-Mack, Canella, Dafney. Might we actually have real competition there by the end of camp? With showings by Garvin and Jones among the OLBs we’ve heard relatively little about till today, maybe I feel more confident that the competition at those two positions is going to be real.

Runyon snapping on punts? I’m fine with that. I do like the way we are actually working on backups who will be active in games just in case. I don’t recall that in years.

Another thing I am really excited about is how RB set up the punt return drill so differently. This year, we get a windy day, make them catch with the wind behind them and then seemingly alter the machine trajectory up to get maximum height and swirl and a ball blown away from the returner—in fact they tend to hang up, inviting potential misjudgment. From experience (rugby) those are the worst to field. So that’s what we practice. Yes! That’s what practice is for. Learn how to handle those and others are a relative breeze.

I know it doesn’t sound rocket science, but when did we do that last? Not for a very long time. This is one way we can see RB just improving how we prepare. It’s so basic it’s bothered me for years but it’s just one of the things RB has changed up. We are going to be so much better on STs because of him.

Good to see Wilborn and McDuffie both showing at ILB. Both are good ST types as well as being more like our two starters and could thus fill in for them without forcing a system change, Could Barnes be under threat?

Thanks again TGR. These pieces are essential reading as far as I am concerned. The real battles have just started for most, but I already see players who may be already starting to make waves now that pads are on.

One of the writers said it was Rodgers best day so far too as far as accuracy. He said he hit 2 or 3 receivers were the DBs really couldn't have done more to stop the completion.

I agree with much of your comment. I have some quibbles. I hope to get to a couple of practices to see for myself. Runyan snapped for a field goal; if he snapped for punts as well, I didn't find a tweet to that effect.

Yes, lots of battles going on. #3, #4 ILB by default would be Barnes and IDK, Wilborn, perhaps, though folks say McDuffie is coming on better. #3 - #5 OLB would be Garvin, Ramsey, and a battle between Tipa and Hamilton? #3 to 4/5 safety: seems like they want Shawn Davis to seize his opportunity. Scott and Innis Gaines getting an opportunity, though neither seems good enough to force the team to keep five safeties. Carpenter might start to show.

The APC and Spofford article annoyed me. Shemar Jean-Charles just began to have a couple of plays. I am not ruling SJC out, but I am not ready to anoint him, either. Nixon missed 6 games last year. He has a good chance to make this team but only as a special teams guy, not as the nickel or dime back. Ento and Gafford are in play. Vaughn and Thomas, IDK. I am uneasy about CB 3 - 5, but I don't have a logical explanation for it. At least there are battles and some positive plays. Really, safety looks more worrisome.

It was a field goal, my memory confused them, but the point that I like seeing preparation for in game emergency options is equally applicable to either.

I don’t know about Hamilton, they seem to like him, but I basically think that for the back up OLBs yesterday was the first test that matters an iota. It was just pleasing to see some getting attention. Without pads it’s all illusory. As LaFleur said, it will really require games to winnow out those who can, and particularly so at positions like LB, RB, S and in the trenches.

Scott is the only S so far seeming to make plays in coverage. He also had a good play as a gunner recently. We need a cover capable S reserve. After that they are mostly ST/Box/hybrid types as I read it. I’m starting to wonder what the backup middle will look like not just from an individual perspective but as to the types. They have a lot of big fast S/smaller fast ILB types. That’s going to be a major ST recruitment source but I am wondering if Walker now changes what Barry wants too, as well as the individual strengths. Box type S players need pads to show up and to evaluate usefully just as ILBs do. We will see

At this point, SJC looks to be CB 4 but he’s an inside guy (something he’s confirmed during camp). SJC has ball skills and has been repeatedly described as sticky in coverage in this camp, but I never want to see him outside. His medium and long speed is just not there. Nixon is the wild card. Pre injury he was getting a ton of snaps in the off season as CB 4 and a ST leader and apparently not looking bad on D-but that’s in essentially walk throughs. He is also an inside guy. One too many? Can he get healthy and can he really hold up on D?

At this point Ento has flashed on the outside but we’ve not seen him tackle. He also looked lost in the middle last year. Until we do see him tackle effectively, we don’t know if he’s a guy they will consider—we know he can cover on the perimeter. Gafford has so far looked good in coverage, and may be a core ST. He seems like the most versatile as a corner and he keeps making plays. Can he continue to do so? If so he’s going to be hard to cut even if he’s not an ST fixture.

Two of those are likely to make it behind the top 3. I can’t see both being inside types, I can see STs weighting the battle, but are others like Leavitt making Nixon less essential? Right now I’d go SJC and Gafford. I could see Nixon beating SJC on ST value though. I could see Ento grabbing the outside reserve, but I think Gafford’s speed, versatility and ST value wins out.

Vaughn and Thomas I know too little of, but, even ignoring them, I see that as a whole lot more convincing depth at CB than we have been used to.

At safety, if I had to hazard a guess now, Leavitt is one and Scott the other. Davis or Gaines could push, but they need to be as valuable on STs or in deep coverage. Davis is a good ST player and Gaines has flashed, but not deep, but Leavitt is already seeming like the ST leader and Scott the only one showing coverage ability in the passing game. I think Carpenter looks to be a project based on his usage. I think he’s been usurped by Leavitt and becoming available and is probably a PS candidate and potentially then in a fight with Gaines—I think Davis may get picked up for STs if waived.

If Scott looks like he did as a rookie, I’m ok with Leavitt. That’s the big “if” though because there is no one else showing signs of coverage ability. It’s just possible they move Nixon or Vaughn (200 and 211 pounds respectively) into that competition too. Both have traits that might suggest S would be a better fit. That might just be wishful thinking on my part though.

Nice post. Yes, we need to breakdown the depth guys in the secondary by function while playing defense and by utility on special teams. Your mentions of Scott are interesting. There have been some tweets about him which have been positive.

I am thinking that breaking down the OLBs by function might be helpful as well. After all, they have to backup both Gary and Preston. However, if Walker is a key cog, that coverage function might be less important in the backup OLBs, leaving just pass rush and holding the edge as primary considerations.

If "Special Teams Demon" (which I'll just call STD from now on) Nixon is going to be active on gameday (and you need to be active to be an STD), then that's one of your CBs. We'll say #5. So it really only boils down to one more. It is possible, with inuries during the season or game, that Nixon or the #4 guy will be matched up against a major horse in the playoffs. I think it'll be Shemar.

Safety is worrisome, but I'm pretty sure Scott is going to make the team. That only leaves room for one more gameday guy.

Watson was drafted to EASILY replace MVS. If/when healthy , he does that and more. We need WR SPEED on the field....At least 2 burners and Jones at the same time. Then we can see our offense be something special and open the field up a bit for the run game also.

Good to hear Amari Rodgers' name getting mentioned. He may be the most likely replacement for Cobb if Cobb gets hurt again. Bummer not to have Christian Watson out there though.

For the most part though, Rodgers is getting mentioned for doing anything because he’s been conspicuously absent. Others like Winfree and Toure for example largely don’t get mentioned for doing the same things consistently (though Davis did yesterday) in the context of PS potential and Rodgers had yet to make a splash play on O. On STs, he has had one good looking return , but Doubs had at least matched that.

At some pint Rodgers has to show that he’s a better slot or return option than others. In fact Doubs, Toure and Winfree appear from my information to be more consistently winning those snaps. Unless he wins as a role as preferred gunner or returner—not by any means certain— will he be active in game days if Cobb is? He’s only an emergency option outside the slot and two active slot specialists is rare.

If so, can we justify keeping him on potential? Bear in Mind that to some extent we are increasingly likely to be carrying Watson on that already. To me that would require Rodgers to start making not just routine but splash plays and stacking them to a point where his upside is visibly such that he is seen as a viable Cobb replacement, is clearly the second best option in the Slot after Cobb-that’s clearly not the case thus far or is sufficiently better on STs, probably realistically that means being a preferred returner.

Place your bets. As of yet, Rodgers really hasn’t stated a case for himself in the field. That said, he is the type of player where games should be his best advertisement. It’s up to him to grab those opportunities and show he belongs.

I thought it was good to hear that he caught three passes and got a lot of separation on one of them. I'm not sure that we can expect a lot of spectacular plays from the slot receivers. Cobb hasn't been mentioned a whole lot so far. Obviously Doubs has been making lots of big plays, but is he making those plays from the slot position? Sounds like it's all outside stuff. Winfree and Toure have made some catches, but not in this report, and I'm not sure how often they have been playing in the slot. I think Amari deserves some credit for making some plays in this particular practice. I don't consider him to be a lock, but I don't think Winfree or Toure are likely to beat him out.

I didn't see anything about Amos. Does that mean he played that good or was he sitting on the side like Alexander?

Amos was playing and continued to look good. Nothing spectacular like the previous day. I assume Jaire was more to allow them to look at others with the ones (or maybe to tempt someone to throw to that side for once). As of yet, I don’t think another S has made a case to get looked at like that.

When Greg Jennings arrived in GB from W. MI, he brought a resume of consistent college production, tons of receptions, and a polished route tree.

Doubs is 2 inches taller but otherwise of similar build and college numbers playing in Nevada.

College production: Jennings...238 receptions for 3,539 yards and 39 touchdowns.

Doubs...225 receptions for 3,322 yards and 26 touchdowns.

FYI...Jennings rookie production as a Packer: 45 receptions for 632 yards.

Good research on that comparison. Would I be happy if Doubs accomplished that, or came close? You bet.

I sure hope he doesn't break himself returning a punt that doesn't have to be returned.

Doubs wears #87. Like the other player who wore it his speed is like that of a long strider. Not quick but fast buildup speed. I think he posted 22-23 MPH in college on a long run. Sorta like Jordy could.
