Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on farmers in Gujarat on Monday to adopt "natural agriculture" techniques as a way to serve Mother Earth.

The Prime Minister said in a video speech recorded at the end of the three-day Maa Umiya temple groundbreaking ceremony that this is the patron saint of the Kadva Patidar agricultural community in northern Gujarat. He said that the impulse to increase yields in the short term forced farmers to use fertilizers and chemicals without caring about Mother Earth, which led to a decline in soil quality.

"I hereby ask you not to forget Mother Earth while serving Maa Umiya. The children of Maa Umiya have no right to forget Mother Earth. For us, both are the same... Therefore, I will ask You take the promise in front of Maa Umiya that you will bring northern Gujarat into natural agriculture," Modi said.

Natural agriculture also means zero-budget agriculture, he said and suggested that farmers gradually adopt it by setting aside a portion of the land for the same or every other year for natural and conventional agriculture.

"This will save costs and bring about change. With the new awareness of Mother Earth, you will do a good job for future generations," he said. The Prime Minister stated that he will also speak on natural agriculture at an event in Gujarat on December 16. "I ask everyone to understand, accept and promote the development of natural agriculture with the blessing of Maa Umiya," he said, adding that this new effort will contribute to the development of Gujarat.

Modi said that agricultural technologies such as drip irrigation have brought major changes to areas such as Banascanta and Kutcher, and are also conducive to water conservation and agriculture. He praised the Patidar community leaders for participating in the religious project of the Maa Umiya temple and serving the community, by building a 13-story building near the religious structure as a training center, preparing for the future of young people and dormitories. He asked them to also arrange training for young people's skills development.

"There is a need to increase the importance of skills development," he added. Modi also thanked community members for actively responding to his call to save girls, because areas dominated by Patidar communities such as Unjha had earlier reported gender imbalances and gradually improved over the years.

He also thanked the farmers in northern Gujarat and Solashtra for actively responding to his call for water conservation, even though the water supply to their farms increased with the increase in the Narmada and Sujalam Sufalam projects. The three-day foundation stone laying ceremony of Umiyadham Temple began on Saturday.

Federal Minister of the Interior Amit Shah attended the inauguration ceremony. In addition to the Maa Umiya Temple, the trust operating the main Unjha temple in the Mehsana district of Gujarat will also build a 13-story complex near the new temple to provide training and dormitory facilities for Patidar youths to prepare them for UPSC and GPSC testing .
