A heatwave has hit the UK - and its seems to have brought a swarm of flying ants with it. The insects are known for appearing during the hot weather.

Flying Ant Day doesn't have a set day, but it usually falls on a humid day and often after heavy rain fall. It took place on the second week of July during the past two years.

The dedicated days marks when males and new queens leave the nest to mate, with many ant colonies doing so on the same day when the conditions are just right, according to the Royal Society of Biology.

Ants can start emerging and flying at almost any point during the summer months, and won't all necessarily appear only on one day, SurreyLive reports. The best way to prevent any ant species from infesting your home is to keep food sealed and locked away.

It's important to say that flying ants are not harmful. For this reason, it is best to leave them alone if some emerge around your garden as they’ll likely fly off within a few hours.
